About the Severna Park High School Marching Band
History
For the last 40 years, under the direction of R. Thomas Powell, the
Severna Park High School Music Department encourages and promotes academic
excellence with a rehearsal and performance schedule that is compatible
with the student’s academic responsibilities. Band members are involved
in athletic events, pep rallies, social programs, community activities,
parades, and marching band tournaments. Together, the members create
and contribute an essential ingredient of school spirit at Severna Park
High School.
The entire Falcon Marching Band performs at every home football game
as well as many Tournament of Bands (TOB's) held at high schools in Maryland,
Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia throughout the marching season.
Participation in the marching band provides both musical and nonmusical
benefits. Every year, students develop musical skills such as sight reading,
memorization, and ear training. In addition, they learn valuable life
skills that are directly relevant to their overall education, including
communication, teamwork, responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment
for a job well done.
(If any Alumni or knowledgeable person wants to contribute
a written history of the SPHS Marching Band and/or Mr. Powell's history
at SPHS, I would be glad to use it in place of what is now here. Submit
to webmaster@sphmusic.org. Thank
you)
Philosophy
A high level of musical excellence is the ultimate goal of the SPHS
Marching Band, but members share a sense of levity and fun along the
way. SPHS is a one-credit course incorporated into a student’s academic
schedule. Enrollment in band classes is a requirement.
SPHS Marching Band should be an enjoyable experience for
all involved.
Finally, a high school marching band is not judged by individual or
section achievements. High school marching bands are collective groups
of students working toward a common goal. The achievement of this goal
can only be attained through group effort. And as with any group effort,
a disciplined effort by all members is crucial.
